djo oversees many different groups. djo groups are associations of young people, that meet in regular intervals to spend time together and become active. Groups can put their focus on different topics. Some groups concentrate on cultures, others keep their attention to social integration. However, all groups strive for a common goal: Their work is not meant to teach children and youths, but to construct a framework and platform for children and youths to grow and develop personally as well as take part in society. A central role are the principles of youth work: self-organized, self-determined, democratic, voluntary, and self-responsible.

Youth associations like djo and its groups need to be structured democratically. This means that groups need to hold elections (of a youth board) and an independent management and administration of their finances. Moreover, youth groups are responsible for representing political interests of their members on municipal and regional level.
